About Animals
Farm Animals

Many people do not realize that in addition to dogs, cats, and rabbits, our Animal Care Centers often receive farm animals including, pigs, goats, sheep, and chickens.  Many of these animals come to us from abusive living situations.

Farm animal abuse often manifests in the form of cruel acts or negligence. Cruel acts include beating animals to death; inhumane hauling and overloading of animals; inhumane handling practices such as: excessive shocking, prodding or beating; or dragging or lifting an injured animal by a leg or other appendage; or other acts which cause injury or unnecessary suffering.  Negligence includes the abandonment of unwanted animals, including sick and unsalable animals at auctions, stockyards, slaughterhouses, and farms, and/or leaving them to die, or providing inadequate food, water, veterinary care, and/or shelter.

The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services is pleased to partner with Animal Acres, a non-profit farm animal sanctuary that works to promote compassionate living through its farmed animal rescue and refuge efforts, public education and outreach, and advocacy projects to prevent cruelty to farm animals. Animal Acres is Southern California's premier shelter for farm animals, offering safe, permanent refuge for hundreds of rescued farm animals.
